Red Pen

Canon. This entry is written from inside the CharliVerse, so its people and companies are fictional. Behind the scenes says what is real.

Red Pen is the name for the Runs of Seamiotics, every seam means something: the red ink, the correction, the marginal NB, the line drawn precisely so the eye goes there. Red Pen pieces live below the hem, in the public conversation, addressed to the room. A Red Pen piece earns a woman's name the way a Signature does: "formidable first, unmissable second, never the other way round."

Aphra Behn

The inaugural Run. The Black Silk leg with a red seam, drawn precisely so the eye goes there. Seamed only: without the seam, she is The Black Silk. Both welts. Named for the first Englishwoman to make a living by her pen, and a working spy under the codename Astrea: "formidable long before she is anything else."

Dorothy Parker

The winter Run: a red fishnet, for the party season, gone in January. Standard, with a red seam, or Plain; never a black seam on a red fishnet. Both welts. The mesh is the edition: the red made total, the exact negative of invisible, and the inversion of George Eliot. "Eliot kept a name that declined to explain her; Parker explained herself continuously, at volume, and was no more accessible for it. Two opposite techniques, one outcome: nobody gets in." The house makes no black fishnet.

Release

Behn and Parker open the Runs together, mid-season in autumn and winter 2027. Parker goes in January; Behn stays. Issued in one drop they explain each other: Behn is one red line, and Parker is the red taken to its limit for one season and then withdrawn.

Behind the scenes

Red Pen is described in the Seamiotics Bible, version 1.4. Aphra Behn and Dorothy Parker are real historical women; the stockings are fictional, and the women are given no words. Parker's mesh, yarn and heel are still to be specified, and Run pricing is held at sixty-five pounds until the house confirms it.
