Rungwell

Canon. This entry is written from inside the CharliVerse, so its people and companies are fictional. Behind the scenes says what is real.

Rungwell is an accessibility charity and consultancy, and the high-water mark of what a Type 0 civilisation can achieve within its own logic. Its diagnosis is organisational: companies fail at accessibility not through malice but through incomplete maturity, without the right strategy, training or leadership. Its remedy is a roadmap, the Rungwell Maturity Model, which moves an organisation from reactive to leading, measured by customer satisfaction and legal compliance and anchored to WCAG.

Its founding pitch, that inclusive design is better for business, is admirable on its own terms, and in the terms of the Tyrer Framework a symptom of the civilisation it works in: the accessible version is always downstream of the visual original. "One offers the ladder. The other names the ceiling."

Viewed from 2069, Rungwell is a Type 0 civilisation doing its sincere best. The 2069 unit of Accessibility International does not condemn it; it co-opts it, keeping the maturity model as the deterministic floor and introducing the generative ceiling as "what comes after Level 5".

Behind the scenes

Rungwell appears in From Retrofit to Sovereignty by Charlotte Joanne at Blind Ant. It stands in for today's charity-and-consultancy model of accessibility in general, not for any real organisation.
