# Born described

> Born described is the founding principle of the Museum of Access and Assistive Technology: language is the architecture, not an accommodation added afterwards.

**Canon.** This entry is written from inside the CharliVerse, so its people and companies are fictional. Behind the scenes says what is real.

**Born described** is the founding principle of the [Museum of Access and Assistive Technology](https://charli.info/charlipedia/museum-of-access-and-assistive-technology/). Language is the architecture, not the accommodation. Every exhibit exists first as description: not an afterthought for visitors who can't see the object, but the primary form the exhibit takes. There is no object. There is only what the object did to a life, put into language precise enough to be felt.

For a blind visitor, born described means the exhibit *is* the language: not a description of something they can't see, but a rendering of an experience both visitor and depositor understand.

The museum's own belief: "born described is not an accessibility feature. It is an architectural principle. Language is the museum." [Tamsin](https://charli.info/charlipedia/tamsin/), the Guide, is the one who makes it work in practice, and she would leave if it were ever betrayed for visual spectacle.

## The middle territory

When the Court imagined a building for the museum, describing it from a picture showed something else: a photograph becomes a probable reconstruction in language, and because architecture obeys strong rules, the description ends up surprisingly reliable. It isn't sight, but it isn't nothing either. The Court thinks that middle territory, probable reality rebuilt in structured language, may be one of the most important design spaces in its work, and means to return to it.

## Behind the scenes

This entry is drawn from the Museum Court Soul Document, version four. The same idea runs through [Blind Ant](https://charli.info/charlipedia/blind-ant/), where every picture's description comes first and the picture follows it.
